Beam Exercises; what are useful exercises for at home?

Due to Covid-19, we all have been stuck at home. That means; no school, no work, no fun outings, but worst of all: no gymnastics. Your coach must have told you many times that you should train twice as often on the beam as on any other gymnastic equipment. Help! Does that mean that you will fall behind twice as much on the balance beam as well? In this blog, I will provide you with tips and tricks to keep your beam skills up-to-date with different beam exercises.

Balance

The most important skill you need for the beam is balance! To ensure that you remain standing on the beam instead of hanging below, you will have to put your body in the right shape and position at any moment of your performance. Therefore, it is important that you do a lot of balance exercises while being at home during this pandemic.

Fortunately, you do not need a beam to train your balance. Below you can find a few simple exercises that you can easily add to your daily routine.

Beam Exercises to Do at Home

  • Live on your toes: Do some of your daily chores on your toes and try to keep your balance. This can be anything; brushing your teeth, making bread, putting your hair in a ponytail, getting dressed, etc. These exercises take no extra time, and yet you are working on your balance. Isn’t that great?

  • Stand on one leg: You can also do all the above exercises on one leg. This is just a bit more difficult, but certainly effective and good for learning how to keep your balance on the beam. Brushing your teeth on one leg is fun, especially if you try it with your eyes closed!

  • Only walk over the lines: Look around you. You will probably see lines everywhere. You will find lines from tiles, from the wooden floor, and line pattern in the carpet or a line of grass. From now on, you don’t just walk to the kitchen or outside; you use the lines to move from one place to another. Backwards, forwards, on your toes, with your eyes closed… You will have endless ways in which you can move around the house. This keeps practicing your balance varied and fun.

Gymnastic Beam exercises

Of course we can make it just a little bit more gymnastic. With a few metres of space in your house or garden, you can do the ‘lanes’ you normally do on the beam, at home. You will get back in shape in no time!
